Canto 4

Manah S'ikshâ

Chapter 12: Dhruva Mahârâja Goes Back to Godhead

(1) Maitreya said: 'Having learned that Dhruva, with his anger lingered, had refrained from killing, did Kuvera, the master of the treasury, worshiped by the Câranas, Kinnaras [singers and indwellers of heaven] and Yakshas, then appear there and spoke he to Dhruva who stood with folded hands before him. (2) The master of the treasury said: 'O son of the ruler, I am very glad with you o sinless one, because under the instruction of your grandfather you gave up the enmity that is so difficult to avoid. (3) Nor did you kill the Yakshas, nor did the Yakshas kill your brother; for it is the Time that is really the master of annihilation and generation of all the living. (4) With the misconceptions of 'I' and 'you' appears it, from ignorance, to the intelligence of a person who follows the bodily concept just to be like in a dream; it is that which is the cause of bondage and misery. (5) Therefore come Dhruva - all good fortune to you - to the respect for the Supreme Lord Beyond the Senses of all living beings and think of Him as the form of the one Supersoul in all that lives. (6) Be in devotion unto Him whose lotus feet are worth the worship, as they deliver from the material existence and cut the knot of material entanglement; although He, to His potency of the modes, is connected with it, is He aloof by His inconceivable potency. (7) O King, please ask without hesitation from me whatever you deem desirable, o son of Uttânapâda; since having heard, o dearest, about your enduring at the lotus feet of Him from whose navel the lotus sprouted, you are worthy the benediction. '

(8) Maitreya said: 'He, by the king of the Yakshas being offered a benediction, asked, as a first class intelligent and thoughtful devotee of the Lord, for the continuous remembrance by which one without difficulty crosses over the unsurpassable ocean of nescience. (9) Kuvera, the son of Idavidâ, being very pleased with Dhruva's mentality, granted him that remembrance and thereafter disappeared out of his sight, after which Dhruva also returned to his capital. (10) He subsequently, by sacrificial ceremonies and great charities, worshiped, with all he had, could do and find support from, the Ruler of all Sacrifice, the objective who awards all results. (11) Unrelenting rendering service unto the one infallible Soul above all, saw he only Him, the Almighty One, the Supreme Spirit situated in all living beings. (12) He thus endowed with godly qualities, of respect for the brahmins and the poor and being the kind protector of the principles of religion, was considered the father of the people. (13) For the thirty-six thousand years of his rule over the planet Earth, he by enjoyment diminished the effects of the good deeds and by austerity diminished the consequences of the inauspicious. (14) Thus the great soul after the passage of many, many years, free from agitated senses, favorably executed the three kinds of worldly action [the regulation of religion, economy and gratification] and then handed the royal throne over to his son. (15) He realized that this universe made of the external energy was to the living being a phantasmagoria prepared by ignorance like in a dream. (16) He considered all the created, of himself, his wives, children, friends, his influence, riches, the pleasure grounds and the upkeep for the women and the complete of the beauty of the earth with its oceans, as something bound to time and thus he left for Badarikâs'rama [the Himalayan forest]. (17) There he purified his body, bathing in pure water and controlled he, fixed in yogic postures, the breathing process by withdrawing the mind from his physical senses. Concentrating on the exact form of the Lord became he so meditating, constantly keeping Him in mind, fully absorbed. (18) Engaged in constant devotion unto Lord Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he was in an everlasting bliss and again and again overcome by a stream of tears that made his heart melt and all the hairs of his body stand on end; he no longer remembered he had a body and was thus liberated from [also the subtlety of] the material bond [mukta-linga].

(19) Dhruva saw a very beautiful chariot descending from the sky that illumined him and the ten directions as if the full moon itself was appearing. (20) There he then saw two beautiful demigods in it with four arms, a blackish skin, being quite young and with eyes reddish like a lotus flower, holding clubs, attractively decorated with helmets, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. (21) Understanding them to be two servants of the One of Renown, he stood up, but being puzzled he forgot the proper way to behave and thus he respectfully joined his hands offering his respects by chanting the names of the chief of these associates, the Enemy of Madhu. (22) He whose heart was always absorbed in thoughts about the feet of Lord Krishna, very humbly with the folding of his hands bowed his head while they, Nanda and Sunanda, the two confidential servants of the One of the Lotusnavel, smiling approached and addressed him. (23) Nanda and Sunanda said: 'O best of kings! All good fortune to you. Listen attentively to our words. You are the one who, being five years old, greatly satisfied God by penance. (24) As the associates of the creator of this entire universe, of the Godhead who carries the bow named S'ârnga, have we approached you to take you with us to where the Lord resides. (25) The position of Vishnu, so difficult to reach that not even the greatest of enlightenment can achieve it, has been conquered by you. Come and simply see the supreme which the moon, the sun, the other planets and the stars circumambulate to the right. (26) Never ever was this achieved by your forefathers or even others, o dear one; come and live there in that supreme position of Lord Vishnu who is so worshipable for the inhabitants of the universe. (27) O immortal soul, you are worthy to board this unique heavenly chariot that was sent to you by the Praised One, the head of all living beings.'

(28) The sage Maitreya said: 'After hearing the speeches pouring like honey from the chief associates of the Lord, took the one so dear to Him, offering the sages his obeisances and accepting their blessings, a purifying bath and performed he his daily duties. (29) In worship having circumambulated that best of positions and also having proved his respects to the two of them, he with his form lighting up like gold, was ready to board the heavenly vehicle. (30) Then the son of Uttânapâda could see death personified approaching him and putting his feet on his head, he ascended that wonder as big as a house. (31) At that moment kettledrums and mridangas [drums of worship] and small drums and such resounded while the singers of liberation sang and flowers showered like rain. (32) As he was about to ascend to the abode of heaven, Dhruva instantly remembered Sunîti and thought: 'How can I go to the world over the worlds leaving behind my poor mother?' (33) Understanding Dhruva's worries, showed the two superior ones of enlightenment him how she, ahead of him, was on the path of reaching her divinity. (34) On his way passing one after another all the heavenly spheres around, was he covered by even more flowers, here and there showered on him by the ones enlightened from their own elevated positions. (35) Surpassing the three worlds traveling by God, he even went beyond the great sages, after which the accomplished Dhruva then achieved the refuge of Vishnu. (36) For certain are it only those who constantly engage in welfare activities who reach that place which, radiating by its self-effulgence, illumines everywhere all the three worlds; not the ones who didn't manage to be merciful with other living beings. (37) Peaceful, equipoised, pure and pleasing to all living beings they easily reach, befriended with His devotees, the abode of the Infallible One. (38) Thus became Dhruva, the son of Uttânapâda, on the supreme path of Krishna, as pure as the summit-jewel of the three worlds. (39) With great force and speed unceasingly connected encircles the sphere of the luminaries [the galaxy] that place, o Kaurava [Vidura's family name], like a herd of bulls around a central pole.

(40) Observing Dhruva's glories was the saintly and great lord Nârada, playing his stringed instrument, chanting verses in the sacrificial arena of the Pracetâs. (41) Nârada sang: 'Thanks to especially the austerity of this son of Sunîti, who is so devoted to her husband, we see the way to that position, whereas of what one calls the followers of the Vedas one is never certain of being eligible, not to mention the normal protectors of the people. (42) He who at the age of five years, aggrieved about the harsh words of the wife of his father, in pursuance of my instruction, so very much pained in his heart went to the forest, won over the Supreme Master, winning with the qualities of His devotees. (43) Within a short while after pleasing the Lord of Vaikunthha he attained that refuge being only five or six years old, whereas any other person cannot even expect to attain after many, many of such years on earth the exalted position of Dhruva, this son of a kshatriya.'

(44) Maitreya said: 'Whatever you asked me here about the great and uplifting character of Dhruva, whose reputation is hailed by the great devotees, I have explained to you. (45) It bestows wealth and repute, increases one's lifespan and is so sacred and auspicious that one can even attain to Dhruva's heaven with it, pleasing as it is to the mind and glorious in counteracting all kinds of sin. (46) Hearing this repeatedly with faith one develops devotional activities dear to the Infallible One, from which there's bound to be the full defeat of all hindrances. (47) For the hearers who desire greatness, high character and the qualities is this the process in which the prowess is found as well as the adoration so desired by those who are thoughtful. (48) One should carefully recite in the morning and the evening in the company of the converted, the sacred renown and great character of Dhruva. (49-50) On a full moon or a new moon, on the day after Ekâdas'î [the twelfth of a lunar month], when the S'ravana star appears, at the end of the tithi [the fifteenth day], at a day called Vyatipâta, at the end of the month or on a holiday, one should recite it to a receptive audience, taking shelter of the lotus feet of the Refuge of the Seeker, without desiring remuneration; then one will find one's mind pacified by the soul and will one thus become perfect. (51) He who imparts this knowledge to the ones unaware of the reality, is on the path of truth and immortality and will, being a kind protector of the seekers, be blessed by the gods. (52) O great one among the Kurus, thus was my description of the activities, the fame and the very pure of Dhruva, who as a child, giving up his playthings and his mother, went away from his home and found the shelter of Lord Vishnu'."

Dhruva Mahârâja Goes Back to Godhead

Text 1

Maitreya said: 'Having learned that Dhruva, with his anger lingered had refrained from killing, did Kuvera, the master of the treasury, worshiped by the Câranas, Kinnaras [singers and indwellers of heaven] and Yakshas, then appear there and spoke he to Dhruva who stood with folded hands before him.

The great sage Maitreya said: My dear Vidura, Dhruva Mahârâja's anger subsided, and he completely ceased killing Yakshas. When Kuvera, the most blessed master of the treasury, learned this news, he appeared before Dhruva. While being worshiped by Yakshas, Kinnaras and Câranas, he spoke to Dhruva Mahârâja, who stood before him with folded hands. (Vedabase)

Text 2

The master of the treasury said: 'O son of the ruler, I am very glad with you o sinless one, because under the instruction of your grandfather you gave up the enmity that is so difficult to avoid.

The master of the treasury, Kuvera, said: O sinless son of a kshatriya, I am very glad to know that under the instruction of your grandfather you have given up your enmity, although it is very difficult to avoid. I am very pleased with you. (Vedabase)

Text 3

Nor did you kill the Yakshas, nor did the Yakshas kill your brother; for it is the Time that is really the master of annihilation and generation of all the living.

Actually, you have not killed the Yakshas, nor have they killed your brother, for the ultimate cause of generation and annihilation is the eternal time feature of the Supreme Lord. (Vedabase)

Text 4

With the misconceptions of 'I' and 'you' appears it, from ignorance, to the intelligence of a person who follows the bodily concept just to be like in a dream; it is that which is the cause of bondage and misery.

Misidentification of oneself and others as "I" and "you" on the basis of the bodily concept of life is a product of ignorance. This bodily concept is the cause of repeated birth and death, and it makes us go on continuously in material existence. (Vedabase)

Text 5

Therefore come Dhruva - all good fortune to you - to the respect for the Supreme Lord Beyond the Senses of all living beings and think of Him as the form of the one Supersoul in all that lives.

My dear Dhruva, come forward. May the Lord always grace you with good fortune. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is beyond our sensory perception, is the Supersoul of all living entities, and thus all entities are one, without distinction. Begin, therefore, to render service unto the transcendental form of the Lord, who is the ultimate shelter of all living entities. (Vedabase)

Text 6

Be in devotion unto Him whose lotus feet are worth the worship, as they deliver from the material existence and cut the knot of material entanglement; although He, to His potency of the modes, is connected with it, is He aloof by His inconceivable potency.

Engage yourself fully, therefore, in the devotional service of the Lord, for only He can deliver us from this entanglement of materialistic existence. Although the Lord is attached to His material potency, He is aloof from her activities. Everything in this material world is happening by the inconceivable potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (Vedabase)

Text 7

O King, please ask without hesitation from me whatever you deem desirable, o son of Uttânapâda; since having heard, o dearest, about your enduring at the lotus feet of Him from whose navel the lotus sprouted, you are worthy the benediction.

My dear Dhruva Mahârâja, son of Mahârâja Uttânapâda, we have heard that you are constantly engaged in transcendental loving service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is known for His lotus navel. You are therefore worthy to take all benedictions from us. Please, therefore, ask without hesitation whatever benediction you want from me. (Vedabase)

Text 8

Maitreya said: 'He, by the king of the Yakshas being offered a benediction, asked, as a first class intelligent and thoughtful devotee of the Lord, for the continuous remembrance by which one without difficulty crosses over the unsurpassable ocean of nescience.

The great sage Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, when thus asked to accept a benediction from Kuvera the Yaksharâja [King of the Yakshas], Dhruva Mahârâja, that most elevated pure devotee, who was an intelligent and thoughtful king, begged that he might have unflinching faith in and remembrance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for thus a person can cross over the ocean of nescience very easily, although it is very difficult for others to cross. (Vedabase)

Text 9

Kuvera, the son of Idavidâ, being very pleased with Dhruva's mentality, granted him that remembrance and thereafter disappeared out of his sight, after which Dhruva also returned to his capital.

The son of Idavidâ, Lord Kuvera, was very pleased, and happily he gave Dhruva Mahârâja the benediction he wanted. Thereafter he disappeared from Dhruva's presence, and Dhruva Mahârâja returned to his capital city. (Vedabase)

Text 10

He subsequently, by sacrificial ceremonies and great charities, worshiped, with all he had, could do and find support from, the Ruler of all Sacrifice, the objective who awards all results.

As long as he remained at home, Dhruva Mahârâja performed many great ceremonial sacrifices in order to please the enjoyer of all sacrifices, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Prescribed ceremonial sacrifices are especially meant to please Lord Vishnu, who is the objective of all such sacrifices and who awards the resultant benedictions. (Vedabase)

Text 11

Unrelenting rendering service unto the one infallible Soul above all, saw he only Him, the Almighty One, the Supreme Spirit situated in all living beings.

Dhruva Mahârâja rendered devotional service unto the Supreme, the reservoir of everything, with unrelenting force. While carrying out his devotional service to the Lord, he could see that everything is situated in Him only and that He is situated in all living entities. The Lord is called Acyuta because He never fails in His prime duty, to give protection to His devotees. (Vedabase)

Text 12

He thus endowed with godly qualities, of respect for the brahmins and the poor and being the kind protector of the principles of religion, was considered the father of the people.

Dhruva Mahârâja was endowed with all godly qualities; he was very respectful to the devotees of the Supreme Lord and very kind to the poor and innocent, and he protected religious principles. With all these qualifications, he was considered to be the direct father of all the citizens. (Vedabase)

Text 13

For the thirty-six thousand years of his rule over the planet Earth, he by enjoyment diminished the effects of the good deeds and by austerity diminished the consequences of the inauspicious.

Dhruva Mahârâja ruled over this planet for thirty-six thousand years; he diminished the reactions of pious activities by enjoyment, and by practicing austerities he diminished inauspicious reactions. (Vedabase)

Text 14

Thus the great soul after the passage of many, many years, free from agitated senses, favorably executed the three kinds of worldly action [the regulation of religion, economy and gratification] and then handed the royal throne over to his son.

The self-controlled great soul Dhruva Mahârâja thus passed many, many years favorably executing three kinds of worldly activities, namely religiosity, economic development and satisfaction of all material desires. Thereafter he handed over the charge of the royal throne to his son. (Vedabase)

Text 15

He realized that this universe made of the external energy was to the living being a phantasmagoria prepared by ignorance like in a dream.

S'rîla Dhruva Mahârâja realized that this cosmic manifestation bewilders living entities like a dream or phantasmagoria because it is a creation of the illusory, external energy of the Supreme Lord. (Vedabase)

Text 16

He considered all the created, of himself, his wives, children, friends, his influence, riches, the pleasure grounds and the upkeep for the women and the complete of the beauty of the earth with its oceans, as something bound to time and thus he left for Badarikâs'rama [the Himalayan forest].

Thus Dhruva Mahârâja, at the end, left his kingdom, which extended all over the earth and was bounded by the great oceans. He considered his body, his wives, his children, his friends, his army, his rich treasury, his very comfortable palaces and his many enjoyable pleasure-grounds to be creations of the illusory energy. Thus in due course of time he retired to the forest in the Himalayas known as Badarikâs'rama. (Vedabase)

Text 17

There he purified his body, bathing in pure water and controlled he, fixed in yogic postures, the breathing process by withdrawing the mind from his physical senses. Concentrating on the exact form of the Lord became he so meditating, constantly keeping Him in mind, fully absorbed.

In Badarikâs'rama Dhruva Mahârâja's senses became completely purified because he bathed regularly in the crystal-clear purified water. He fixed his sitting position and by yogic practice controlled the breathing process and the air of life; in this way his senses were completely withdrawn. Then he concentrated his mind on the arcâ-vigraha form of the Lord, which is the exact replica of the Lord and, thus meditating upon Him, entered into complete trance. (Vedabase)

Text 18:

Engaged in constant devotion unto Lord Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he was in an everlasting bliss and again and again overcome by a stream of tears that made his heart melt and all the hairs of his body stand on end; he no longer remembered he had a body and was thus liberated from [also the subtlety of] the material bond [mukta-linga].

Because of his transcendental bliss, incessant tears flowed from his eyes, his heart melted, and there was shivering and standing of the hairs all over his body. Thus transformed, in a trance of devotional service, Dhruva Mahârâja completely forgot his bodily existence, and thus he immediately became liberated from material bondage. (Vedabase)

Text 19:

Dhruva saw a very beautiful chariot descending from the sky that illumined him and the ten directions as if the full moon itself was appearing.

As soon as the symptoms of his liberation were manifest, he saw a very beautiful airplane coming down from the sky, as if the brilliant full moon were coming down, illuminating all the ten directions. (Vedabase)

Text 20:

There he then saw two beautiful demigods in it with four arms, a blackish skin, being quite young and with eyes reddish like a lotus flower, holding clubs, attractively decorated with helmets, bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

Dhruva Mahârâja saw two very beautiful associates of Lord Vishnu in the plane. They had four hands and a blackish bodily luster, they were very youthful, and their eyes were just like reddish lotus flowers. They held clubs in their hands, and they were dressed in very attractive garments with helmets and were decorated with necklaces, bracelets and earrings. (Vedabase)

Text 21:

Understanding them to be two servants of the One of Renown, he stood up, but being puzzled he forgot the proper way to behave and thus he respectfully joined his hands offering his respects by chanting the names of the chief of these associates, the Enemy of Madhu.

Dhruva Mahârâja, seeing that these uncommon personalities were direct servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, immediately stood up. But, being puzzled, in hastiness he forgot how to receive them in the proper way. Therefore he simply offered obeisances with folded hands and chanted and glorified the holy names of the Lord. (Vedabase)

Text 22:

He whose heart was always absorbed in thoughts about the feet of Lord Krishna, very humbly with the folding of his hands bowed his head while they, Nanda and Sunanda, the two confidential servants of the One of the Lotusnavel, smiling approached and addressed him.

Dhruva Mahârâja was always absorbed in thinking of the lotus feet of Lord Krishna. His heart was full with Krishna. When the two confidential servants of the Supreme Lord, who were named Nanda and Sunanda, approached him, smiling happily, Dhruva stood with folded hands, bowing humbly. They then addressed him as follows. (Vedabase)

Text 23:

Nanda and Sunanda said: 'O best of kings! All good fortune to you. Listen attentively to our words. You are the one who, being five years old, greatly satisfied God by penance.

Nanda and Sunanda, the two confidential associates of Lord Vishnu, said: Dear King, let there be all good fortune unto you. Please attentively hear what we shall say. When you were only five years old, you underwent severe austerities, and you thereby greatly satisfied the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (Vedabase)

Text 24:

As the associates of the creator of this entire universe, of the Godhead who carries the bow named S'ârnga, have we approached you to take you with us to where the Lord resides.

We are representatives of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the creator of the whole universe, who carries in His hand the bow named S'ârnga. We have been specifically deputed to take you to the spiritual world. (Vedabase)

Text 25:

The position of Vishnu, so difficult to reach that not even the greatest of enlightenment can achieve it, has been conquered by you. Come and simply see the supreme which the moon, the sun, the other planets and the stars circumambulate to the right.

To achieve Vishnuloka is very difficult, but by your austerity you have conquered. Even the great rishis and demigods cannot achieve this position. Simply to see the supreme abode [the Vishnu planet], the sun and moon and all the other planets, stars, lunar mansions and solar systems are circumambulating it. Now please come; you are welcome to go there. (Vedabase)

Text 26:

Never ever was this achieved by your forefathers or even others, o dear one; come and live there in that supreme position of Lord Vishnu who is so worshipable for the inhabitants of the universe.

Dear King Dhruva, neither your forefathers nor anyone else before you ever achieved such a transcendental planet. The planet known as Vishnuloka, where Lord Vishnu personally resides, is the highest of all. It is worshipable by the inhabitants of all other planets within the universe. Please come with us and live there eternally. (Vedabase)

Text 27:

O immortal soul, you are worthy to board this unique heavenly chariot that was sent to you by the Praised One, the head of all living beings.

O immortal one, this unique airplane has been sent by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is worshiped by selected prayers and who is the chief of all living entities. You are quite worthy to board such a plane. (Vedabase)

Text 28:

The sage Maitreya said: 'After hearing the speeches pouring like honey from the chief associates of the Lord, took the one so dear to Him, offering the sages his obeisances and accepting their blessings, a purifying bath and performed he his daily duties.

The great sage Maitreya continued: Mahârâja Dhruva was very dear to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When he heard the sweet speeches of the Lord's chief associates in the Vaikunthha planet, he immediately took his sacred bath, dressed himself with suitable ornaments, and performed his daily spiritual duties. Thereafter he offered his respectful obeisances to the great sages present there and accepted their blessings. (Vedabase)

Text 29:

In worship having circumambulated that best of positions and also having proved his respects to the two of them, he with his form lighting up like gold, was ready to board the heavenly vehicle.

Before getting aboard, Dhruva Mahârâja worshiped the airplane, circumambulated it, and also offered obeisances to the associates of Vishnu. In the meantime he became as brilliant and illuminating as molten gold. He was thus completely prepared to board the transcendental plane. (Vedabase)

Text 30:

Then the son of Uttânapâda could see death personified approaching him and putting his feet on his head, he ascended that wonder as big as a house.

When Dhruva Mahârâja was attempting to get on the transcendental plane, he saw death personified approach him. Not caring for death, however, he took advantage of the opportunity to put his feet on the head of death, and thus he got up on the airplane, which was as big as a house. (Vedabase)

Text 31:

At that moment kettledrums and mridangas [drums of worship] and small drums and such resounded while the singers of liberation sang and flowers showered like rain.

At that time drums and kettledrums resounded from the sky, the chief Gandharvas began to sing and other demigods showered flowers like torrents of rain upon Dhruva Mahârâja. (Vedabase)

Text 32:

As he was about to ascend to the abode of heaven, Dhruva instantly remembered Sunîti and thought: 'How can I go to the world over the worlds leaving behind my poor mother?'

Dhruva was seated in the transcendental airplane, which was just about to start, when he remembered his poor mother, Suniti. He thought to himself, "How shall I go alone to the Vaikunthha planet and leave behind my poor mother?" (Vedabase)

Text 33:

Understanding Dhruva's worries, showed the two superior ones of enlightenment him how she, ahead of him, was on the path of reaching her divinity.

The great associates of Vaikunthhaloka, Nanda and Sunanda, could understand the mind of Dhruva Mahârâja, and thus they showed him that his mother, Suniti, was going forward in another plane. (Vedabase)

Text 34:

On his way passing one after another all the heavenly spheres around, was he covered by even more flowers, here and there showered on him by the ones enlightened from their own elevated positions.

While Dhruva Mahârâja was passing through space, he gradually saw all the planets of the solar system, and on the path he saw all the demigods in their airplanes showering flowers upon him like rain. (Vedabase)

Text 35:

Surpassing the three worlds traveling by God, he even went beyond the great sages, after which the accomplished Dhruva then achieved the refuge of Vishnu.

Dhruva Mahârâja thus surpassed the seven planetary systems of the great sages who are known as saptarishi. Beyond that region, he achieved the transcendental situation of permanent life in the planet where Lord Vishnu lives. (Vedabase)

Text 36:

For certain are it only those who constantly engage in welfare activities who reach that place which, radiating by its self-effulgence, illumines everywhere all the three worlds; not the ones who didn't manage to be merciful with other living beings.

The self-effulgent Vaikunthha planets, by whose illumination alone all the illuminating planets within this material world give off reflected light, cannot be reached by those who are not merciful to other living entities. Only persons who constantly engage in welfare activities for other living entities can reach the Vaikunthha planets. (Vedabase)

Text 37:

Peaceful, equipoised, pure and pleasing to all living beings they easily reach, befriended with His devotees, the abode of the Infallible One.

Persons who are peaceful, equipoised, cleansed and purified, and who know the art of pleasing all other living entities, keep friendship only with devotees of the Lord; they alone can very easily achieve the perfection of going back home, back to Godhead. (Vedabase)

Text 38:

Thus became Dhruva, the son of Uttânapâda, on the supreme path of Krishna, as pure as the summit-jewel of the three worlds.

In this way, the fully Krishna conscious Dhruva Mahârâja, the exalted son of Mahârâja Uttânapâda, attained the summit of the three statuses of planetary systems. (Vedabase)

Text 39:

With great force and speed unceasingly connected encircles the sphere of the luminaries [the galaxy] that place, o Kaurava [Vidura's family name], like a herd of bulls around a central pole.

Saint Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, descendant of Kuru, as a herd of bulls circumambulates a central pole on their right side, all the luminaries within the universal sky unceasingly circumambulate the abode of Dhruva Mahârâja with great force and speed. (Vedabase)

Text 40:

Observing Dhruva's glories was the saintly and great lord Nârada, playing his stringed instrument, chanting verses in the sacrificial arena of the Pracetâs.

After observing the glories of Dhruva Mahârâja, the great sage Nârada, playing his vînâ, went to the sacrificial arena of the Pracetâs and very happily chanted the following three verses. (Vedabase)

Text 41:

Nârada sang: 'Thanks to especially the austerity of this son of Sunîti, who is so devoted to her husband, we see the way to that position, whereas of what one calls the followers of the Vedas one is never certain of being eligible, not to mention the normal protectors of the people.

The great sage Nârada said: Simply by the influence of his spiritual advancement and powerful austerity, Dhruva Mahârâja, the son of Suniti, who was devoted to her husband, acquired an exalted position not possible to attain even for the so-called Vedantists or strict followers of the Vedic principles, not to speak of ordinary human beings. (Vedabase)

Text 42:

He who at the age of five years, aggrieved about the harsh words of the wife of his father, in pursuance of my instruction, so very much pained in his heart went to the forest, won over the Supreme Master, winning with the qualities of His devotees.

The great sage Nârada continued: Just see how Dhruva Mahârâja, aggrieved at the harsh words of his stepmother, went to the forest at the age of only five years and under my direction underwent austerity. Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead is unconquerable, Dhruva Mahârâja defeated Him with the specific qualifications possessed by the Lord's devotees. (Vedabase)

Text 43:

Within a short while after pleasing the Lord of Vaikunthha he attained that refuge being only five or six years old, whereas any other person cannot even expect to attain after many, many of such years on earth the exalted position of Dhruva, this son of a kshatriya.'

Dhruva Mahârâja attained an exalted position at the age of only five or six years, after undergoing austerity for six months. Alas, a great kshatriya cannot achieve such a position even after undergoing austerities for many, many years. (Vedabase)

Text 44:

Maitreya said: 'Whatever you asked me here about the great and uplifting character of Dhruva, whose reputation is hailed by the great devotees, I have explained to you.
